openEPD was originally created by C-Change Labs to offer an open, public API to BuildingTransparency.org’s EC3 database.

We had originally hoped to use an existing standard like ILCD+EPD, but we soon found that, while generating documents that way was easy, compiling and managing them from many disparate sources was required enormous amounts of manual work.

As the system has matured and additional companies have started to adopt it, it is time to start an official group to steer the standard and promote open standards within the EPD industry. For now, this group is being incubated by C-Change Labs, but we aim to make it independent as soon as practical.

We hope that’s why you are here: to make digital EPDs as cheap, reliable, and verifiable as a mobile boarding pass or an e-transfer.
